The Diabetes Research Center was established in 1977, with the award of a Diabetes Research and Training Center grant from the National Institutes of Health. The mission of the Diabetes Research and Training Center is to:

- Support the growth and development of a scientific base devoted to basic and clinical research related to the causes and treatment of diabetes and it's complications.

- Support translational research targeted to the prevention and treatment of diabetes and it's complications, especially in minority and underserved populations

- Provide a pilot and feasibility program to support initiation of research programs in diabetes-related areas that are both biomedical and behavioral
