Welcome to the Casadevall Weekly Lab Meetings (Schedules) As part of our training we meet on Tuesday mornings for our weekly lab meetings. These informal but rigorous lab meetings are imperative for our continuous learning, through in depth discussions of our works in progress. As our conference room begins to fill up with Dr. Casadevall's, Dr. Goldman's Dr.Fries', Dr. Nosanchuk's, and Dr. Dadachova's lab members, Arturo takes the opportunity to drink his coffee and chat with a few members about their publications or grants in progress. The format of our lab meetings is simple yet effective in including all the members of the four laboratories that participate. The first person who speaks gives the lab update. This person presents a 10-15 minute talk on how their research is coming along. This is a great opportunity to obtain feedback from the other lab members on how to overcome potential problems or how to devise better experiments to answer the scientific problem.
LM 2-4: Dr. Erin McClelland gives her lab update on unknown genes in C.neoformans. The second person to speak presents the lab meeting. This speaker is responsible for giving a 40 minute presentation on their works in progress. The format is to propose several scientific questions and explain what experimental approaches have been taken to address them. Lab meetings are especially helpful since they raise the most discussion. Here, everyone from all training levels give their opinions on how to design a better experiment, help the presenter sharpen their presentation skills, or begin new collaborations. Most importantly everyone learns from each other.
LM 5-6: Fourth year Ph.D candidate Abraham Guerrero (Fries Lab) practices for his works in progress talk later in the week. Arturo and the lab give him some suggestions on how to improve the talk. The last part of our meeting is to discuss any problems that are affecting the lab function. The discussion leader is one of our lab members that is assigned monthly, the role of the lab manager. We all stand and discuss issues such as lab safety, broken equipment, how to care for our microscopes and how to improve our efficiency in the lab.
LM 7-8: The lab discusses equipment and laboratory renovations. Sometimes Arturo decides to tell us some anecdote or share his philosophical views on human nature. This makes our lab meetings more fun.
LM 9-10: Arturo shares with us that human nature is like a parabolic curve.
LM 11: We all listen and laugh.
LM 12: Arturo laughs with us. Lab meeting is adjourned! | ||||
