AECOM Supervisors

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

We would like to remind everyone again about the important role of the immediate supervisor in the safety process.  The supervisory role is also an important function of the Principal Investigator.  To supervise is to be in charge of and to direct those being supervised.  It also implies being concerned for the well being of those under your supervision.  The Department of Environmental Health and Safety can have safety plans, create work guidelines, offer worker training, inspect workplaces and respond to emergencies, but the real work of ensuring safe operations lies in the day-to-day supervision of the worker.  The supervisor, armed with information on the required tasks of the employee and the hazards associated with these tasks, is by far the best person to ensure the safety of his/her employees and the surrounding area.

Immediate supervisors, including Principal Investigators, must incorporate safety into their operations.  They must point out unsafe conditions and instruct on how to perform the work safely.  They must ensure that hazardous materials are used, stored and disposed safely.  If they see unsafe conditions, they must stop work until conditions are restored to safety and, when necessary, they must discipline workers who deliberately disobey safe practices.

It is only by acknowledging the important role of the supervisor in ensuring safe operations in their work area, that the overall safety process will be effective.
