A Commitment to Excellence in Graduate Medical Education
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is committed to excellence in all of its academic programs. To assure excellence in graduate medical education, Einstein has undertaken the responsibility to serve as the ACGME-identified institutional sponsor for the residency programs based in Montefiore Medical Center, our primary clinical affiliate, as well as in Jacobi Medical Center, the College’s first clinical teaching site. In its capacity as institutional sponsor, Einstein works with department chairs and residency program directors to assure that the residency programs in these two hospital systems provide quality education and excellent clinical training, and meet all accreditation requirements.
To accomplish the oversight required of an institutional sponsor, in 1989 Einstein established the Office of Graduate Medical Education and appointed its first Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education. Staffed by the GME Administrator and Administrative Secretary, and in collaboration with the Directors of Housestaff affairs at the affiliated hospitals, the Office of GME provides centralized administrative support for GME for Einstein and its clinical affiliates.
Einstein also established the Committee on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) which serves as an open-forum for oversight of GME programs and activities. Chaired by a senior faculty member/program director, COGME is open to participation by all program directors and program administrators, as well as by faculty and residents with an interest in GME quality and accreditation. COGME meets on a regular basis and fulfills the following responsibilities, among others:
- Performance of mid-cycle internal reviews of all residency programs.
- Review of annual reports from all residency programs.
- Review of reports of RRC site visits and letters of accreditation.
- Development of policies required by ACGME pertaining but not limited to:
- resident selection, evaluation, promotion and graduation
- work-hours and conditions of employment
- institutional support systems
- faculty supervision
- Evaluation of plans for major changes in residency complement or program.
- Follow-up on issues identified by self-, internal, or external review.
The COGME also serves as an important venue for faculty development with respect to residency program accreditation requirements, program and curriculum design, competency evaluation methods and other topics of interest. The topical agenda for the COGME seminar series is set by the committee’s participants each year. In addition, educational materials on topics required by the ACGME for all trainees have been developed and posted on the COGME website.
Quality resident education is an important basic resource for quality medical student education. The Associate Dean for GME, the GME Administrator and Administrative Secretary, the Chair of COGME and all participating faculty staff and residents are committed to this quality. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine and its clinical affiliates strongly support this Commitment to Excellence in Graduate Medical Education.
