In its March 24th Health Care Report, Crain's New York Business prominently featured Albert Einstein College of Medicine and its new Michael F. Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine/Harold and Muriel Block Research Pavilion in a cover story for the special section about new development and expansion at New York City's leading biomedical research institutions. Dr. Allen M. Spiegel, The Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein, was quoted throughout the article. In another article in the special section, Dr. Harris Goldstein, director of Einstein's Center for AIDS Research, and Dr. Jeffrey Pessin, director of Einstein's Diabetes Research Center, were quoted about collaboration between research institutions. (March 24, 2008) Bloomberg TV’s “Night Talk” program, hosted by Mike Schneider, featured a half-hour segment with Dr. Allen M. Spiegel. The focus of Dr. Spiegel’s discussion with Mr. Schneider included the state of medical education, Einstein’s million-dollar stem cell grant from New York State, and aspects of stem cell research that show promise at Einstein and in general. (February 20, 2008) The New York Times featured an obituary on Dr. Ernst Jaffé, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Medicine and Senior Associate Dean Emeritus, who passed away on February 16, 2008. Dr. Jaffé was widely recognized as one of the founders of modern hematology, and he will be remembered for his scientific talent and creativity, as well as for his thoughtful, humane and compassionate leadership. (February 24, 2008) Esquire magazine profiled Dr. William Jacobs as part of its annual “The Best and the Brightest” issue. Dr. Jacobs is Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and professor of microbiology and immunology at Einstein. (December 2007) The Marker, which also is known as the “Israeli Forbes,” included Dr. Nir Barzilai in a cover story naming the most successful Israelis living outside of Israel. The New York Times ran a “Letter to the Editor,” sent by Drs. Harry Shamoon and Jill Crandall, regarding the content of a Times article about the ACCORD trial that they believed offered misleading information concerning treatment of blood glucose levels among individuals with diabetes. The article they referred to appeared on the front page of the February 7th issue of the Times. Dr. Shamoon is Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research and Director of Einstein’s General Clinical Research Center, which served as a site for Einstein researchers involved in the ACCORD study. Dr. Crandall is associate professor of clinical medicine at Einstein. (February 13, 2008) WABC-TV served as media sponsor for the Colon Cancer Challenge, established by Dr. Thomas Weber, professor of surgery and of molecular genetics at Einstein. The
news station featured the fifth annual run/walk—which was co-sponsored by Einstein and its University Hospital, Montefiore
Medical Center—on its website. (February 4, 2008)
John McKenzie at ABC-TV’s “World News Tonight” interviewed Dr. Stephen Baum, professor of microbiology and immunology, about an outbreak of Hepatitis C in Nevada stemming from poor safety practices at a local clinic in that state. (February 29, 2008) The New York Times, in a major article on the health hazards resulting from exposure to mold, especially with regard to asthma, quoted Dr. Hal Strelnick, professor of family and social medicine at Einstein. (December 3, 2007) For an investigative report on ABC News’ “20/20,” Brian Ross interviewed Dr. Todd Olson about the use of plasticized human cadavers in the popular “Bodies” exhibits across the nation. Dr. Olson also was a guest of Chris Moore’s Sunday radio show on KDKA-Radio, in Pittsburgh, concerning the same topic. (February 13, 2008; March 2, 2008) Men’s Health magazine noted the three-question quiz developed by Dr. Richard Lipton, professor and vice chair of neurology, to aid in screening for migraines—an affliction that often goes undiagnosed in men. (January 14, 2008) WABC-TV featured a segment on Einstein’s Hispanic Community Health Study, a landmark effort that will examine the health of Hispanics in the Bronx. Dr. Robert Kaplan, co-principal investigator and associate professor of epidemiology and population health was interviewed, along with Dr. Elizabeth Lee-Rey, an investigator in the study who is a member of the clinical staff at Einstein’s University Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, as well as assistant professor of family and social medicine at Einstein. (February 18, 2008) ABCNews.com quoted Dr. Darwin Deen, professor of family and social medicine, in a story about the psychological aspects of eating and dieting. (February 12, 2008) ABCNews.com featured an opinion piece by Dr. Keith Ayoob, associate professor of pediatrics, concerning the role of artificial sweeteners in weight gain. (February 11, 2008) ABCNews.com included comments from Dr. Keith Ayoob concerning the effectiveness of a new CD that features songs whose lyrics are meant to inspire healthy eating and weight loss. (February 21, 2008) The “Dr. Deepak Chopra Program” on Sirius Radio invited Dr. T. Byram Karasu, professor and chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences to speak about the treatment of successful people. (February 2, 2008) |
