The Genotyping Core is part of the DNA Sequencing Facility. There are five different ways to perform genotyping at AECOM to assess different alleles, all of which are available in the core:

1. Affymetrix 500k and 100k SNP arrays. Processing of DNA for the arrays is included. This is for the highest throughput of SNP genotyping.

2. Pyrosequencing will perform individual SNP resequencing for 96 samples/10 minutes. This technology is useful for screening a lot of DNAs for known SNPs.

3. Transgenomics WAVE dHPLC will analyze 96 samples overnight. It is useful for SNP or mutation discovery. It is slower throughput than the other technologies, but it is the only one besides DNA sequencing that allows one to "find" new mutations.

4. Microsatellite screening for linkage can be performed on the ABI 3730 DNA sequencing instrument. The same instrument can be used for other assays of medium throughput genotyping.

5. The ABI 9700 Taq-Man Real-Time PCR instrument can be used both for quantitative PCR and for SNP genotyping on 96 well plates. This is to analyze known SNPs.
