3D SEM and the "famous" worm movie

Although the colored images to the left simply look liked colorized images, they're really much more. Both images are composed of overlayed monochromatic SEM images taken at different rotational or tilt axes. When your left eye views one angle, and your right eye views the other angle, your brain presents you with a true three dementional image. All you need to see the effect is a pair of red (left eye) and Blue (right eye) glasses. If you don't see the effect at first, be patient and relax. The image should look as through you can touch it.

More fun with the SEM. This short movie that zooms over and around a wild type C. elegans hermaphrodite is composed of over 150 individual digital SEM images. It took two people (myself and Adam Hartley) over 5 hours to collect the data.

In this movie, you can see the following structures: whip-like tail; vulva; alae; annuli; deirid; mouth; amphid and labia.

See http://www.wormatlas.org/handbook/bodyshape.htm for more details on these structures. (Labeled monochromatic SEM images on this site also by C.B. marks)
