R03 Small Research Grant
"To provide research
support specifically limited in time and amount for studies in categorical program areas.
Small grants provide flexibility for initiating studies which are generally for
preliminary short-term projects and are
non-renewable." R03 guidelines vary
between NIH institutes. Generally, these grants provide a maximum of
$50,000
direct costs per year for 2 years. Most R03 applications must be in response to
program announcements
or requests for applications. Contact NIH institute program
directors before preparing R03 applications.
R21 Exploratory/Developmental
"To encourage the
development of new research activities in categorical program areas. Support
generally
is restricted in level of support and in time." R21 grants tend to
fund research that may not be supported by
considerable preliminary data. R21
guidelines vary between NIH institutes. Generally, these grants provide a
maximum of
$125,000 direct costs per year for 2 years. Most R21 applications must be in
response to program
announcements or requests for applications. Contact NIH
institute program directors before preparing R21 applications.
