Introduction to Extramural Funding

Introduction to Funding Categories

FEDERAL SOURCES
The U.S. government announces daily almost all federal grant opportunities in the Federal Register and
almost
all federal contract opportunities in the FBO Daily.  The major exceptions are NIH grants and contracts
which are published weekly in the NIH Guide and NSF grants which are published in the NSF Guide to
Programs
.

PRIVATE SOURCES
Private sources of extramural funding include gifts from individuals and grants from private foundations,
corporations and corporate foundations, charitable organizations (including many well known voluntary health
organizations), and various professional societies.  For several reasons, including the existence of over 50,000
private foundations in the U.S., a comprehensive database of private grant opportunities does not exist.  However,
a number of internet sites exist for exploring private funding options.  The OGS has the Foundation Center's
database on CD-ROM.  Contact the OGS for help with identifying private foundation and corporate sources.
