Projects and programs supported by this Division have as their goal the
development and reinforcement of behavior that forms the basis of an
ethical and compassionate medical practice, done in accordance with the
highest standards of professionalism and with a focus on medicine as a
healing profession in the broadest sense of the term. Projects in this
Division that reflect a research question may be eligible for
financial support under any of the research fellowship categories
described in the Project Fellowships and Programs Directory.
Examples of projects supported by this Division are studies dealing with:
challenging problems in medical ethics, including those that may be viewed
from the perspective of religious beliefs and values; the roles of
religion and spirituality in clinical medicine; various aspects of the
doctor patient encounter; relationships between medicine and literature,
visual arts or music.
This Division in association with the Division of Community and Population
Health supports the elective course in Social Medicine (see description
under latter Division). It also supports The
Healing Arts elective course for first year students. This course explores
the human dimensions of medicine and deals with topics such as discovering
and nurturing one’s wholeness, sharing grief and honoring loss, mystery
and awe in medicine, and preserving one’s commitment to medicine. |
