Admissions
M.D. Degree Program
The Committee on Admissions
considers several thousand applicants to the Albert
Einstein College of Medicine each year and recommends to the Dean
the acceptance of 180 first-year students. The goal of the Committee is
to select for admission a diverse and talented group of students who show
great promise of becoming respected and distinguished members of the medical
community in all areas including teaching, research, clinical practice
and administration. In addition to demonstrated academic excellence, the
Committee carefully evaluates personal qualities such as maturity, personal
integrity and leadership ability as well as the capacity for compassion,
empathy, and sound and responsible judgment.
Serious consideration is also
given to participation in extracurricular activities, service orientation,
research and investigative efforts, practical experience in clinical settings
leading to familiarity with health care delivery systems, and to sincere
and realistic motivation for pursuing a career in medicine.
It is recommended that students
enter the medical college upon completion of four years of undergraduate
study. It is recognized, however, that a few exceptional candidates may
be ready to begin their medical studies after only three years of preparation.
Students with advanced degrees in science and other disciplines have also
been favorably considered.
Students who have earned
baccalaureate degrees outside the United States are required to complete
at least one year of formal study in an accredited American college or
university prior to application to the College of Medicine. It is recommended
that such students take courses in the sciences and in English, if this
is not the student's first language. Individuals whose studies abroad
did not lead to a baccalaureate degree are required to complete an undergraduate
degree-granting course of study in the United States prior to application.
Unsuccessful applicants to
medical school are discouraged from reapplying the subsequent year and
until such time as they can present new data to warrant a more favorable
decision.
The Albert Einstein College
of Medicine is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and non-discrimination
and encourages applications from qualified students regardless of race,
color, age, creed, sex, national origin or physical handicap, within the
meaning of applicable law. In recent years women have comprised over 45
percent of each entering class. Older individuals who have achieved success
in academic, artistic, service-oriented or professional careers have been
favorably considered.
