MEDICAL
COLLEGE ADMISSION TEST
The New MCAT or The MCAT initially administered in April 1991 is required
and
must be taken not later than the fall preceding anticipated matriculation
at the
College of Medicine. This examination is administered twice each year,
in the
spring and fall. Information and registration materials may be obtained
by
writing to: MCAT Registration, American College Testing Program, P.O.
Box 414,
Iowa City, Iowa 52243.
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is a participant in the American
Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) and will consider for admission
only
those applications formally processed by this agency. Application packets
are
available, early in the spring of the year preceding anticipated matriculatioll,
from: The American Medical College Application Service, 2450 N Street,
N.W.,
Suite 201, Washington, D.C. 20037. Applications received at AMCAS after
1
November of that year will not be accepted for consideration by the Committee
on
Admissions.
Receipt of applications from AMCAS will he promptly acknowledged by the
Office
of Admissions. At that time, applicants will be requested to submit directly
to
the College of Medicine additional documentation required to complete
the
application, including the nonrefundable $80 College application fee and
letters
of recommendation. The composite evaluation of a Pre-Medical Advisory
Committee
is preferred. If this is not available, the Committee will accept letters
of
recommendation from two members of the undergraduate faculty. One of these
must be from the department in which the student has majored. The letters
must be
from different departments, and at least one must be from a biology or
chemistry
teacher. The Committee on Admissions will consider only completed
application files, and it is the responsibility of the applicant to arrange
for
receipt of all necessary documents by 15 March. Applicants will be notified
by
mail when their applications have been completed.
An interview is required of all applicants under serious consideration
for
admission. Candidates will be invited for interviews only upon the recommendation
of the Committee on Admissions following preliminary review of a completed
application. Applicants who do not attend school or reside on the East
Coast are
encouraged to notify the Office of Admissions, in writing, of their plans
to be in
New York; however, this does not guarantee that an interview will be awarded.
Interviews are conducted only from early fall through spring, and requests
for
interviews during the summer months or prior to submission of an application,
therefore, cannot be granted.
Notification of Committee decisions commences on 15th of January and continues
throughout the year until the selection process has been completed. Accepted
applicants are asked to respond to the offer of admission within two weeks.
A
deposit of $100, to be applied to the first semester's tuition, is required
to
reserve a place in the entering class. This deposit is refundable, upon
written
notice of withdrawal, until 1 June.
All inquiries regarding the status of applications and all responses to
letters
from the Admissions Office, including wait list and acceptance letters,
must be
either faxed or sent by first-class mail to the Admissions Office and
must
contain a signature. Inquiries and responses sent by electronic mail will
not be
accepted.
The Committee on Admissions welcomes applications for early decision from
students who are academically well-qualified for the study of medicine
and who
have decided that the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is their first
choice
school.
Applicants must submit all application material to AMCAS by 1 August.
The
Einstein supplemental application material must be received by the Office
of
Admissions by 15 August. MCATS must be taken not later than the spring
preceding
the summer of application.
Acceptance notices for early decision are mailed by 1 October. Until that
date,
students may not apply to any other medical school. Accepted students
are bound
to accept the offer of admission.
Students who would like to defer their matriculation for one year may
do so if
during the deferral year the student will be involved either in completing
coursework leading to a degree, a specified research project, or a clinical
activity in which he/she will receive a better understanding and appreciation
for
the delivery of health care.
Students who are granted a deferral must apply as Early Decision applicants
the
year prior to matriculation. Acceptance is guaranteed.
Applications for deferrals are not considered after 1 June.
