C503  Clinical Nuclear Medicine

This course is designed to introduce the student to Clinical Nuclear Medicine. The elective may be spent at WHAECOM, JMC or Moses, depending on the student's preference. At all of the hospitals there is an intensive exposure to the clinical applications of Nuclear Medicine, including imaging and non-imaging techniques. JMC places special emphasis on renal studies and computer technology; WHAECOM has special emphasis on general Nuclear Medicine and Cardiovascular studies, while Moses offers intensive exposure to brain, neurologic applications and cardiology.  The student may elect to work at Montefiore Medical Park where the emphasis is on PET/CT imaging of structure and function.  A combined experience with exposure to PET and General Nuclear Medicine as well as Cardiovascular Medicine can be constructed to suit the student's interest.  The various options in this module can easily be modified in length and emphasis for individual students depending on their background.

All students participate in the cross campus conferences including Journal Club, Grand Rounds and Problem Case Reviews.

First day of elective meet 1695A Eastchester Road - 9:00 A.M.

C506 MicroPET Laboratory

The student may elect to work n the MicroPET laboratory.  This laboratory has a microPET machine for imaging of small animals in conjunction with projects of investigators throughout the medical school.  Projects are also generated by the Department of Nuclear Medicine.  The student will gain experience in small animal handling, basic science investigation and small animal imaging.  There will be additionally an opportunity to observe some of the activities in the radiochemistry and organic chemistry synthesis programs.

C507  Clinical Nuclear Medicine Research Elective

This course offers the student the opportunity of participation in an ongoing clinical research program, as well as the general department conferences. Current ongoing projects in the department vary and the student should consult with Dr. Blaufox before electing this program. The course is given at JMC, WHAECOM, or MMC.

C702 Nuclear Medicine- LIJ

This elective introduces the student to the use of Nuclear Medicine diagnostic modalities, which are heavily based in the physical sciences, including physics, mathematics, electronics and computer science.

During the course of this elective, the student will receive didactic instruction in the related basic sciences. There will also be sessions devote to the biological effects of internally administered isotopes as well as the important aspects of radiation protection. The student will participate in the usual organ imaging procedures and will take part in all discussions concerned with the interpretation of the results so as to obtain an understanding of the relationship between the study and the diagnostic problems as presented to the clinician.
