All students planning an elective in Obstetrics
& Gynecology and Women's Health should meet Dr. Nadine Katz prior to
registration. Please call (718) 430-3205 to set up an appointment.
The student
will see patients who have problems with reproductive hormone (some
male, although mostly female patients). Patients will be followed
in the Gyn-Endo, and Medical Endocrine Clinic and in Dr. Freeman's
private practice of Endocrinology Menopause and Osteoporosis on Mondays PM and Thursday AM. Students
will participate in the bone densitometry procedures and evaluations.
The student may participate in research regarding treatment of
postmenopausal patients and osteoporosis. We are currently
enrolling patients in the KEEPS (Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study)
and have additional ongoing clinical trials. There is a new study
of the glucose levels over 3 days, including regular activities in PCOS
patients.
Students wishing to do an elective should call Dr. Freeman at (718)
405-8152.

This experience is
offered to provide an opportunity to participate in ongoing research for
students with an interest in perinatal biology. Projects will involve
the general areas of fetal and maternal physiology. Specific departmental
areas of interest include basic aspects of fetal lung maturation,
sympathetic
nervous system function, and blood pressure regulation during pregnancy.
Students will be actively involved in a research activity of their own,
or will interface with ongoing activities in the laboratory. It is anticipated
that they will develop some technical research skills, and will develop
expertise in obtaining, analyzing and presenting scientific data.
In addition to participation in the research, the student will comprehensively
review a related aspect of the literature and present a verbal and written
report of this area.

couples with problems of infertility, pregnancy wastage, and factors contributing
to adverse pregnancy outcome. Opportunity will be provided to participate
in genetic screening and counseling, prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis,

Description of
Program:
The student will spend one
month on the Weiler Gynecology Service. The purpose of the sub-internship is
to give the student an in-depth exposure to benign Gynecology, GYN surgery
and the Gynecologic aspects of a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Many
of the third year clerkships place a stronger emphasis on obstetrics and
sub-internships are available for Obstetrics and for Gyn Oncology
(specifically dealing with Gyn malignancies, and the surgical and non
surgical management of them). This rotation will provide the student with
the opportunity to function on an intern level, and play an active role in
the pre-operative, intra-operative and postoperative management of benign
gynecological patients.
The student will first
assist on a variety of major and minimally invasive GYN procedures and will
function as an integral member of the team.
Activities and
Responsibilities of Students:
The student will be
required to round daily with the team at 7 am and present to the GYN
attending on service. The student will perform complete admission histories
and physicals, formulate a differential diagnosis, develop a diagnostic and
therapeutic plan and present to the senior resident. The student will
participate in Emergency Room consults and pre-operative clinics with the
GYN team. The student will be responsible for subsequent management and
daily follow-up for each patient assigned. The student will participate in
all GYN conferences.
The student will have the opportunity to hone his/her surgical skills and be
given the opportunity to perform exams under anesthesia, D&Cs,
hysteroscopy, fascia and skin closure as well as GYN sonograms and
endometrial biopsies.
Each student will be
required to give an oral topic presentation to the GYN residents and
attending as well as submit a written case write-up.
Objectives:
Supervising Attendings:
Erika Banks MD,
Director of Gynecology
Janice Falls MD,
Associate Director of Gynecology
Amy Kesselman MD,
Associate Clerkship Director
Duration: One Month
Typical Day: 7am-6pm
Monday-Friday. Two weekend day calls covering GYNconsult service.

interest to students considering any primary care field involving women
of reproductive age. Clinical activities will take place in
outpatient and inpatient sites where care is provided for women with
medical and obstetrical conditions complicating pregnancy.
The focus will be
on:
1. Physiologic
adaptations to pregnancy and how they alter care of other conditions.
2. Preconception
evaluation and intervention for well women and women with prior illness.
3. Common medical
disorder in pregnancy including diabetes, hypertension, asthma and

A subinternship is
offered to provide an opportunity for the student to participate
in the overall management of gynecologic oncology patients. The student
will be exposed to acutely and chronically ill patients with gynecologic
malignancies. It is anticiapted that the student will be present at
procedures such as central venous line placement, paracentesis, infusion
catheter placements, etc. The student will participate in pre and
post operative management of patients on the gynecologic oncology
service. The basic principles of chemotherapy and radiotherapy will
be introduced. There is exposure to multiple and varied clinical
settings and extensive surgical time in the operating room. Didactic
and bedside teaching with attending gynecologic oncologists, gynecologic
oncology fellows and OB/GYN occurs on a daily basis. Interested students
are encouraged to participate in ongoing clinical and/or basic research
projects. Previous students have submitted their research for
publication in peer reviewed journals and these have been presented at
national cancer conferences and meetings.

The new program will
afford the individual an opportunity to become actively involved as a part
of the house staff in the clinical management of patients in various aspects
of Obs/Gyn: OPD, Antepartum-Postpartum wards, gyn ward, O.R. and labor-delivery
unit. Clinical activity will be supervised by the chief resident with
instruction from the resident and attending staff. Daily rounds, teaching
seminars, conferences, O.R. and labor-delivery experience will be an integral
part of this elective program.
This subinternship
will provide the individual with a hands-on experience to learn what the
field of Obs/Gyn encompasses. Those who have been undecided in their decision
as to specialty choice will be in a better position to choose; those who
decide to apply or a residency will allow the attendings a better opportunity
to evaluate them for our program as well as for a better in-depth recommendation;
and for a large group of students who desire more Ob/Gyn experience.
