Students will participate
in vascular surgical procedures, angioplasties, and other newer interventions
performed on the service including the management of arterial and venous
disease of both the upper and lower extremities. Although the emphasis
will be on lower extremity occlusive disease, there will also be considerable
exposure to carotid and aortic disease and new endovascular techniques.
An introduction for
the non-invasive vascular laboratory and vascular radiology will also
be a part of this elective.

Students are given broad exposure to the diagnosis of the surgical patient including pre-and post-operative care. They participate as clinical clerks under the supervision of the resident and attending staff. This program includes history taking, physical examinations, routine diagnostic and therapeutic ward procedures, scrubbing in the operating room and participation on post-operative care with clinical follow-up. These actives are closely supervised in order to maximize the clinical benefit. Students attend scheduled departmental conferences and have daily seminars on previously assigned topics. They attend morning and evening Housestaff rounds and are on call for emergencies every third night. The
Division Of Pediatrics Surgery at the Schneider Children's Hospital
offers a one-month elective for 4th year medical students. This is
a very busy pediatric surgical service. We enjoy a large volume of
patients with many diverse clinical problems. Students on our
service will interact with a large group of pediatric surgical
attendings. In addition, general surgery residents from NS-LIJ
rotate through the service and are actively involved in patient care.
We are proud to have one of the country's few fully approved fellowships
in pediatric surgery. Our fellow runs daily rounds and oversees
the service. One morning a week is dedicated to formal didactics
and the medical student will be integrated into the service with
clinical responsibilities. The student will be expected to help us
solve problems and support our spirit of lifelong learning. Our
entire faculty shares a commitment to role modeling and education.
This rotation should appeal to students interested in pediatrics and
pediatric subspecialties. It will be of interest to future
surgeons who want exposure to pediatric surgery.
The student likely to appreciate this experience is one who works hard
and becomes actively involved in problem solving.
The director of the elective is Dr. Stephen Dolgin, Chief of Pediatric
Surgery at Schneider Children's Hospital. The contact person on
the staff is Ms. Rosanne Milano who can be reached at (718) 470-3135.
Dr. Dolgin would like to speak to interested students before they commit
to this experience.
A706 Experimental Surgical Research- Long Island Jewish Medical Center
The Department of Surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center has several active laboratories for surgical research in Vascular Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery and Plastic Surgery. Some of the areas of interest include Aortic Elastin Metabolism. Pancreatic Exocrine function, Stress Ulceration, Estrogen Receptors in Breast Cancer, non-invasive measurements or cardiac output, ano-rectal malformations, and liver regeneration. Laboratory experience includes methods of cell culture, HPLC, biochemical techniques and molecular biology. May of the ongoing research projects include medical student participation. Students are expected to begin and complete a project and usually co-author of at least one published manuscript. Several projects are supported by external funding, so that, a student stipend is available on some projects. This elective is also available for a 12-week period (1-½ modules).
