Training Program in Research Ethics in the Americas

Co-directors: Ruth Macklin, Ph.D., Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York, USA; Florencia Luna, Ph.D., FLACSO, University of Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The training program is being conducted under a grant from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

OPEN TO:  Physicians, biomedical scientists, bioethicists, lawyers, philosophers, social scientists, and other scholars

QUALIFICATIONS

Ø      Applicants must be bilingual in English and Spanish, and reside in any country in Central or South America. 

Ø      They must hold a medical degree (MD), a law degree (JD), a Ph.D., or a Master’s degree with substantial teaching, research, or clinical experience.

Ø      Candidates must be employed at an institution to which they will return at the conclusion of the fellowship year.

Ø      They must provide evidence of institutional support to enable them to implement the results of their training experience.

Ø      Individuals working or teaching in public institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Ø      Likelihood of making a substantial impact in their institution/community country after the training year

Ø      Educational background and degrees

Ø      Relevant experience in research involving human subjects or research ethics

Ø      Past accomplishments, including publications and projects established or supervised

 THE TRAINING PROGRAM

Ø      Trainees will spend seven months in the program, which will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

Ø      The host institution is FLACSO, where trainees will have an office equipped with a computer and printer. 

Ø      Trainees are expected to arrive in Buenos Aires on April 15, 2006 and will return home in mid-November 2006.

 Program activities include:

Ø      attendance at research ethics committees in several hospitals

Ø      participation in bioethics seminars taught by Drs. Macklin and Luna, and other international faculty

Ø      enrollment in other courses relevant to the trainee’s discipline,

Ø      completion of a mentored research project

Ø      preparation of a detailed plan for implementing activities in research ethics at the trainee’s home institution.

STIPENDS

            Trainees will receive a stipend that is expected to cover their living expenses in Buenos Aires.  The cost of economy class airfare will be provided for all travel in connection with the training program.
