Each user of the Yeshiva University network is required to ensure that his
or her use of the network is lawful and complies with University policy as
stated in the
Yeshiva University Computer Policy Handbook.
Students registering computers for ResNet network connection in
University Residence Halls and housing should be aware of the following
conditions and limitations.
Each student or authorized user in University Residences will be
permitted to register one computer for connection in the Residence Halls.
Once registered, the computer may be moved to any live connection outlet
on ResNet.
Network connection outlets ("jacks") may not be disassembled or
modified and the cables may not be altered, cut, spliced, re-routed,
tapped into or extended beyond the area they were designed to serve.
Connecting cables from the jack may not extend outside of a single
apartment or dorm room.
No hubs or switches may be connected to ResNet network connections.
Personal routers may be used to share a ResNet connection among
multiple computers and/or printers used by family members residing in the
same apartment, but may not extend the connection beyond a single
apartment or room. Any shared connections are the responsibility of the
student who installs them, and the University will not provide technical
assistance in installing them nor support for maintaining them. It is the
responsibility of the student or authorized user installing such personal
routers to ensure that the shared connection setup will not interfere with
other ResNet users' access and that all individuals using the access are
aware of and comply with all University policies.
ResNet network connections may not be shared with non-residents, or
with non-students beyond family members living with the student. Shared
connections may not be used to avoid network connection charges among
individuals who would otherwise be expected to pay such charges
individually.
ResNet network connections may not be used for servers that are
accessible from the public Internet (i.e., web servers, mail servers, FTP
servers, etc.)
Dial-in (i.e., inbound auto-answer) modems may not be attached to any
computer or device on ResNet network connections.
Connecting a (WiFi) wireless router to ResNet is permitted only if it
is limited and secured to ensure that only individuals who are entitled to
ResNet access can connect to it. Wireless access coverage that extends to
users outside of the University is not permitted. Low-power wireless
connections, (e.g., Bluetooth devices) are preferred for personal wireless
access within an apartment or dorm room to minimize interference between
users. It is the responsibility of the registered user of the ResNet to
ensure that wireless connections are properly secured and that the range
of coverage is appropriately limited. The University will require
disconnection of wireless devices that are determined to be insufficiently
secure or that interfere with University wireless devices. The University
will provide no technical assistance or support for the installation or
maintenance of wireless connections.
Anti-Virus Software is required on all computers connected to the
University network. The anti-virus software must be under a current
license; virus definition files must be updated at least weekly,
preferably every time connection is established; and the software must be
configured for real-time scanning of all incoming files. Full system scans
should be scheduled on a regular basis.
Norton Anti-Virus
from Symantec is licensed by the University and may be
downloaded free of
charge to any computer connected to the University Network.
It is University policy to respect copyrights on all licensed software
and published materials. Downloading or installing copyrighted software,
music, videos or other materials, or making them available to others via
the University network or otherwise without an applicable license or
permission from the copyright holder is not permitted.
ResNet network connections may not be used for any commercial purpose.
ResNet network connections may not be used in any way that interferes
with network management or with other users. Examples include installing
or forging an IP address other than the one assigned, creating excessive
network traffic, generating port scans or probes of any University or
external network or system, or in any way violating University policies as
stated in the Computer Policy Handbook.
ResNet users who do not comply with these policies are subject to
having their network bandwidth throttled or their network connection
disabled. They may have their computer access privileges revoked and may
be subject to applicable administrative or academic disciplinary
procedures. ResNet users who violate any laws may be subject to civil or
criminal actions.
