The Tuberculosis Research Group at AECOM has the resources and equipment necessary for designing and carrying out sophisticated experiments and for implementing new and modern methods and protocols in a wide range of areas concerning the molecular genetics and cell biology of mycobacteria. The group is operating a Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL3) Lab, with one of the very best aerosol chambers installed. These resources enable us to design different models of the tuberculosis infection and to study in vivo the causative agent Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its pathogenicity.

Molecular Genetics

Our experiments in molecular genetics are mainly designed and performed in Dr. Jacobs's Lab. The aim here is to create and implement the tools for the mycobacterial genetics, such as: construction of new plasmid and phasmid vectors, creating null mutants of M. tuberculosis and M. smegmatis in different metabolic pathways; construction of genomic libraries; transposon delivery systems; site-specific recombination systems; design of new vaccine candidate strains; and many others.
